Urban Mela: Kalaghoda Arts Festival
The city of commerce celebrates the arts
Come the second week of February, if you’re in Mumbai, head for the Kala Ghoda area in the south of the city. You’ll be in good company. For nine days, the road that once featured a black equestrian statue (hence the name kala ghoda) of King Edward VII at its opening, is closed off to vehicles and turns into a cultural carnival. Aside from street art and large installations, food, and a number of other stalls, there are a number of event streams, including music, dance, theatre, film and literature, events for children, and guided heritage walks through the precinct and its neighbourhood. The best part? All the events are free. Just be sure to jostle your way in early for the more popular events.
Dates: February 6 - 14. Events run all day on the weekends, and every evening on the weekdays.
