This phone is a glorious piece of telemetry.

The most important aspect of the iPhone 4 is its scintillating screen. Apple calls the screen a Retina Display. That is, it’s got as many pixels per inch as the human eye can distinguish: A whopping 960x640.

If you didn’t find the camera on the 3GS up to the mark, the iPhone 4 now shoots pics at 5 megs. There’s tap-to-focus and an LED flash for better flexibility. The front cam can shoot pics and take videos too, albeit at VGA 640x480.

Video recording now gets bumped up to 720p at 30fps. There’s tap-to-focus available during recording and an LED light to assist during low light. You can download the official iMovie app from the App Store for $4.99 to edit videos directly on the phone.

Other phones may have had video calling for a while but Apple’s implementation is, nevertheless, convenient. Called FaceTime (only available over Wi-Fi, for now), you can video-chat using the phone’s front or rear facing camera with another iPhone 4 user.

Looks and performance? At 9.3 mm, it’s the world’s thinnest smartphone yet. The body’s all metal, after Apple’s two-year dalliance with plastic. The glass screen is ultradurable and much more scratch-resistant too. It uses the same processor as in the iPad, Apple’s own A4 chip which runs at 1GHz, and comes preloaded with iOS4, Apple’s newest revision, which supports multitasking, folders, enhanced email, iBooks, wireless keyboards, etc. Also worth mentioning: 3G HSDPA, Wi-Fi N, a three-axis gyroscope and 7/14 hours talktime on 3G/2G.

ITALIAN RHAPSODY

First TAG, then Armani and now it’s Versace’s turn to launch its communicator. The Versace Unique is crafted from ceramic by ModeLabs: 18K yellow gold-finish, hand-crafted leather and a sapphire crystal screen. But it’s the tech that has us interested.

The Unique handles all the duties of a phone — 3G, email, multimedia, and a 5-meg cam with flash. And it comes with Dolby Mobile surround sound — all courtesy LG.

Bang & Olufsen has taken the humble subwoofer and revamped it for urban loft-dwellers and persons of discernment everywhere. The Beolab 11, far from the bulky, crate-like subs we’re used to, is a tulip-shaped work of art that cries out to be put on display rather than hidden behind a sofa. With a 200 W output, supporting bass frequencies down to 125 Hz, the Beolab 11 comprises two facing, elliptical speaker cabinets with aluminium outer shells and 6.5-inch drivers. You can position it on the floor like a regular sub, but because Bang & Olufsen has thoughtfully engineered it so that vibration emissions are kept to a bare minimum, there is also the option to wall-mount it.

AUTO
DIY CAR WASH

Bosch’s Aquatak 100plus and the Aquatak Clic130 are cleaning systems that enable one to wash and clean a car with less effort, time and car wash expense. The Clic130 draws in water through a pipe from a tap, and its 2000 W motor sends it out again at a maximum pressure of 130 bar via a fixed nozzle that can switch between fan spray, high pressure pencil jet and low pressure spray for rinsing. It has an integrated detergent tank, self coiling electric cable and a nozzle hose.

Five minutes, and the car is spotlessly clean (a bike takes just two minutes). It uses less water than a garden hose and the pressure is enough to remove the stains in one sweep like a magic wand. It actually makes the vehicle cleaning routine fun.

If you thought that a 3D TV, a Blu-ray player and Thiel speakers could complete your dream ‘home entertainment’ set up, then check this out. This is a home theatre acoustically customised by HKMT Acoustic Designs (hkmtgroup.com), a Delhi-based consulting firm. A miniature replica of INOX, this comes with a carpeted floor, comfy, motorised recliners and mood lighting. But the real highlight is the tech. This room, for example, includes a 14-foot-wide screen, an HD multimedia jukebox with storage capacity of 500 GB to 30 TB and an HD projector. And, one ring, erm, remote, to control them all!.

SUNNY SIDE UP

The i.Tech Solar Voice 908 looks like a regular Bluetooth headset, but that’s until you realise that the panel on top isn’t a cool design; it is, in fact, a solar panel, which charges the internal battery via sunlight! Yeah, practically free! While it may appear bulky, it’s reasonably light and comfortable to wear. it comes with four rubber tips, so you can choose the one that fits you best. Feature-wise, it’s loaded. Bluetooth v2.1 and A2DP, last number dialled, voice dialling, call reject, etc, and it can connect simultaneously to two devices. Pairing is a breeze and voice quality is quite good. The solar charging works well too. All it needs is direct sunlight, and a green light flashes to tell you it’s charging. There’s a cradle included as well, giving you the leisure to charge it while on the move — just fix it on your car dashboard and see it soak up the sun. You can also charge it via a regular main adapter and USB, just in case.

SCRUBBED

The common perception about scrubs is that they only help exfoliate the skin. But a few like L’Occitane’s Cade Juniper Bark scrub prove to be an exception. This non-drying gel removes dead cells and impurities, and natural ingredients like olive oil and cade wood work to soften the dermis, preparing it for shaving. In fact, claims L’Occitane, regular use helps eliminate ingrowth and post-shaving dryness.
