Any advances in AI for surveillance and predictive policing need to be accompanied by the use of responsible AI to maximise the benefits and minimise the harms of the technology
A few decades ago, artificial intelligence (AI) technology was little more than the subject of science fiction movies and novels. With technological advancement in the last 20 years, AI is already a part of various sectors such as transportation, finance, energy, healthcare, and so on. AI technology uses algorithms to analyse vast amounts of data to make business decisions. Through learning human behaviours, the software also develops the ability to mimic and eventually forecast future actions or predictions. With the growth in technology’s ability and accuracy, law enforcement agencies around the world are using AI technologies and solutions to combat crimes.
AI has facilitated the creation and delivery of innovative police services, connected police forces to citizens, built trust and strengthened associations with communities. Smart solutions such as biometrics, facial recognition, smart cameras, and video surveillance systems are growing use of AI.
According to a recent study by Deloitte, smart technologies such as AI could help cities reduce crime by 30 to 40 percent and reduce response times for emergency services by 20 to 35 percent.
AI systems are frequently used to analyse images, text and speech, assess risks or determine probabilities, generate content, optimise processes, and automate workflow.
Many countries worldwide are using facial recognition and biometrics, in-car and body cameras for police, drones and aerial surveillance, and crowdsourcing crime reporting and emergency applications to ensure public safety. License plate recognition systems are machine learning systems designed to identify numbers on plates and link with vehicle owners. Several law enforcement agencies around the world use facial recognition technology to support the identification of suspects, victims and missing persons, and even witnesses.
