LaFerrari

Why: The first mild hybrid from the Ferrari stable, the LaFerrari became the most powerful car ever built by the company in 2013. It consumes 40 percent less fuel compared to a standard model. With inputs from Rory Byrne, the F1 designer responsible for no fewer than 11 World Championship-winning cars, only 499 of the LaFerrari will be made. Ferrari claims the car will have a top speed of 350 kmph and can clock 0-100 km in less than 3 seconds. There are no known owners yet.

Bugatti Veyron
Price:

Why: This is the fastest and one of the most expensive cars in the world. It is named after Pierre Veyron, winner of the 1939 24 Hours of Le Mans, who partnered the tragic Jean-Pierre Wimille to victory at the annual motor endurance event. The Veyron was launched in 2005. Manufactured in Molsheim, France, by Volkswagen, the Veyron is assembled piece by piece by eight employees, and no more than one or two vehicles are produced every week.

Aston Martin One 77

Why: If you believe in exclusivity then the Aston Martin One 77 is the car for you. A two-door sports coupe, this is the company’s most expensive production car, and only 77 units of the model have been made. Deliveries began in 2011. Back in 2006, the company built a separate production facility for it, announcing that no motoring journalist would drive one in official capacity; the experience being reserved for owners only.
Who’s got one? The Dubai police. Yes.

Koenigsegg Agera

Why: The Agera has the best of two worlds: It is the only Roadster Hypercar with a detachable and stowable hardtop. Made in Sweden, Agera means ‘to take action’ in Swedish. It is also short for the ancient Greek word Ageratos, meaning ‘ageless’. The Koenigsegg 5 litre V8 bi-turbo engine churns out more than 960 hp and runs on 95 octane fuel; maximum speed is 400 kmph.

Pagani Huayra

Why: Inspired by a plane barreling down a runaway and about to take off, the Pagani Huayra is an Italian mid-engined sports car. Named after Huayra-tata, which means ‘god of the winds’ in Quechua, the language of the Incas, Pagani makes just 40 cars a year. With a top speed of 372 kmph and jet-like design, the Huayra has many admirers.

Porsche 918 Spyder

Why: Well-rooted in the tradition of German automobile engineering perfection and not overly flamboyant, the 918 Spyder is a mid-engine, sports plug-in hybrid manufactured by Porsche. It has a combined output of 887 hp, 608 bhp from a 4.6 litre, V8 engine plus 279 bhp from two electric motors. The production-ready model was launched at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, where Porsche claimed the car can accelerate from 0-100 kmph in 2.8 seconds. Only 918 units of this car will be manufactured.

McLaren 12C

Why: The 12C is the first production car wholly designed and built by McLaren since the McLaren F1 in 1998. It has a carbon fibre chassis and is powered by a 3.8 litre, V8 twin turbo engine that churns out about 616 bhp. It is said to be the best driver-centric supercar, with the driver’s seat close to the centre of the vehicle.
